The Spergola company
Five wine firms of Scandiano municipal district got together to preserve, promote and spread this local historical vine.
The Spergola vine is typically growing in the hills and foot-hill area of Scandiano since long ago. It is a small local treasure, which is protected by the Municipal Designation of Origin, established by Scandiano Municipality.
To promote the territory and its delicious fruit, Bertolani
winery, Cantina di Arceto, Cantina Colli di Scandiano, Casali
Viticultori e Tenuta di Aljano created the "Spergola company". The
first historical testimonies concerning the Spergola vine of
Scandiano trace back to Bianca Capello, Grand Duchess of Tuscany,
who quoted it.
In the course of history it has received different designations: in
1644 the marquess Vincenzo Tanara called it Pomoria or
Pellegrina; in 1811 Claudio Dalla Fossa called it
Spergolina, and in 1839 the earl Giorgio Gallesio named
two typologies: Spargolina normale and Spargolina
molle.
The interest towards this vine has remained strong to our days and
in 2000 this vine has been deeply studied by a group of researchers
(Ilaria Filippetti, Oriana Silvestroni, Solange Ramazzotti, Cesare
Intrieri) both from a morphological and a genetic point of
view.
From the Spergola bunch of grapes with a green-yellow coloured skin you can obtain a balanced wine, intense and fine, with floral hints of hawthorn, acacia and lime tree; there are also smells of apricot, grapes and citrus fruit. Flavoured, medium bodied with the right acidity and well structured this wine suitably accompanies several foods thanks to its different typologies: dry, medium dry, sweet, sparkling and raisin wine.
It is drinking well with starters, fish first courses, filled
pasta ("cappelletti", "tortelli"), light second courses and salami
and cold pork meat. It is also delicious with Parmesan cheese at
the beginning or at the end of the meal.
On the other hand the sweet Spergola it is enjoyable with cakes,
biscuits and trifle. Finally if you desire a delicious moment ..
try it with a slice of ring-shaped cake!!
